The week of Sept 15 - Sept 19 is Sexual Violence Awareness Week. We all need to be aware of "What is Consent" and " What is Not Consent."

"What is Consent"
- Consent to have sex is when both people agree to have sex.
- A Clear understanding of what is being asked for and consented to.
-Consent should be Freely Given
-Consent must never be assumed.
-It's always OK to say NO

"What is Not Consent"
-Silence, or not responding is not consent. The absence of a NO does not mean YES
-A Yes is not consent when someone is coerced, pressured, or afraid of how their partner might react to a NO response.
-Confused or unclear communication is not consent. Sometimes we may think we mean one thing we are actually saying something else.

June 15 is a day we all should keep in mind. There are many older adults in Newfoundland and Labrador who experience violence and abuse. This includes physical, emotional and sexual violence and well as neglect and financial abuse. We all make choices everyday. Some choices we make can be harmful and violate people's rights.

May 17th is symbolic date for homosexual people. Long considered an illness, homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses on May 17, 1990 by the World Health Organization.

In spite of greater social recognition of sexual diversity in several countries, homophobia still exists. It is flagrant in some countries, and more subtle in others. Since homophobia is form of discrimination just like any other form of discrimination, it's important to raise the awareness of people from all walks of life to fight it.
